Temporary resident visa
Visit Canada for travel, family or business
A visitor visa, also called a temporary resident visa (TRV), is placed in your passport and shows that you meet the requirements to travel to Canada. Indian passport holders need one to visit.
The visa officer decides whether to issue a single-entry or multiple-entry visa, and for how long. A visitor visa can be valid for up to 10 years, or until your passport or biometrics expire, whichever comes first.
What a Canada visitor visa covers
- Holidays and sightseeing
- Visits to children, relatives and friends
- Business meetings and events, and some training activities that qualify under IRCC's business visitor rules
- Attending a convocation or family occasion
Most visitors can stay for up to six months on each entry. The border services officer decides your stay when you arrive and may allow less or more time.
Your options
Choose the right Canada visit visa
The purpose of your trip decides how your application should be prepared.
Tourist and family visits
This is the standard visitor visa for holidays and for visiting relatives or friends. If you are staying with family, a letter of invitation from them can support your application.
Business visitor
You can visit for business if you plan to stay for less than six months, you will not enter the Canadian labour market, and your main place of business and income remains outside Canada.
Super visa for parents and grandparents
The super visa lets parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents stay for up to five years at a time, with multiple entries over a period of up to 10 years. Your child or grandchild in Canada acts as host: they must sign a letter of invitation that includes a commitment to support you financially, and meet IRCC's minimum income requirement, so check IRCC's current super visa page for the income rules. The applicant needs a medical exam and private health insurance valid for at least one year from entry, from a Canadian insurer or an approved company outside Canada.

FAQs
Your Canada Visitor visa questions, answered
Can I get a 10-year Canada visitor visa?
A visitor visa can be valid for up to 10 years, but the officer decides the validity and the number of entries. It cannot last beyond your passport or biometrics expiry.
How much money do I need for a Canada tourist visa?
IRCC does not set a fixed amount. You need enough for your stay, which depends on how long you stay and where. Your funds should match the trip you describe.
What should I do if my Canada visitor visa was refused?
Read the refusal reasons first. A new application helps only if it addresses those reasons with stronger or clearer evidence, so we review your refusal before you reapply.
